Bichchuron: Nationwide Innovative Idea Competition on Renewable Energy

With a vision to encourage the youth to share fresh and innovative ideas on the renewable energy sector to make power available for all and contribute to the overall sustainable development of Bangladesh, a nationwide innovative idea competition in the search for renewable energy titled ‘Bicchuron’ started on 21 October 2019.

The national youth platform, Young Bangla, in association with the Power Cell of the Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources and Green Delta Insurance Company organized this competition across the country. Seminars and workshops held on universities to motivate students to submit their ideas. Till November 18, 2019, students of 50 universities and different educational institutions of the country submitted a total of 700 ideas.

Through initial screening, the best 100 innovative ideas were selected for Dhaka pitching, which was held on November 22, where the top 30 teams received tickets to join National Camp at Sheikh Hasina National Youth Development Institute in Savar from 8-9 December 2019. The top 30 teams participated in a two-day special workshop designed to train the teams on successful pitching and basics of entrepreneurship.

The Grand Finale of ‘Bicchuron’ was held on December 10, 2019, at the Sheikh Hasina National Youth Development Institute in Savar. The chief guest of the session was Mr. Nasrul Hamid, MP, Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. The respected juries including the chief guest were Mohammad Hossain, Director General, Power Cell, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Md. Abdur Rouf Miah, Director (Sustainable Energy), Power Cell, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, SK. Munir Ahmad, Director (Management), Power Cell, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Faezanah Chowdhury, Managing Director, and CEO, Green Delta Insurance Company Limited, Janmajoy Dey, Assistant Coordinator, Centre for Research and Information (CRI) and Siddique Zobair, Member (Additional Secretary), Energy Efficiency & Conservation, SREDA.

In the pitching round, the top 30 participants presented their ideas and projects in front the honorable judges. Some of the ideas were converting ocean wave derived kinetic energy to electricity, electricity generation from speed breakers, hydropower water turbine, biomass fuel stove, creating electricity from footsteps pressure using piezoelectric crystals, electricity generation from soil and plant, using gas-petrol moderator, cleaning dart from solar panels using AI system, gathering electricity from rainwater force, using vertical axis wind turbine and eco-friendly cooler etc. Top 10 winners are – Gas and Petrol Mediator, Eco-Cooler, Gravitational Water Vortex, Unknown Innovators, Aqua Power, IUT Innovators, Eco-Power, Productive maintenance of Solar Power Plant by Using IoT, and BUBT Representer.

The top 10 ideas received funding are following respectively –
1. Gas & Petrol Moderator,
2. Eco-cooler,
3. Gravitational Water Vortex,
4. Electricity Generation from Soil Earth – Battery,
5. Electricity Generation from Waste and Rain Water Using Hydro-generator,
6. Combined Powerplant Design by Harnessing Wave Energy & Wind Energy with ‘Searaser’ and ‘Wind Turbine’ – for Saint Martin’s Island,
7. Eco-Power,
8. Proactive IOT Based Solar PV Plant Maintenance System,
9. Produce Electricity from Footsteps Pressure Using Piezoelectric Crystals
10. Hydro Power Water Turbine.

Executive Director of CRI, Mr. Sabbir Bin Shams encouraged young people to invest their time and energy to discover and innovate new methods of renewable energy production. So that, we may have our own intellectual property on renewable energy.

Farzanah Chowdhury, Managing Director and CEO, Green Delta Insurance Company Limited mainly said that investing in the youth-lead enterprise will create new opportunities for future Bangladesh. She requested national cooperate houses to come forward to support startups initiated by young people.

Mohammad Hossain, Director General, Power Cell, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources expressed his willingness to continue this kind of renewable energy competition for the upcoming years. He requested the young generation to improve something that already existed. He added that next time they will try to reach more and more universities to make this kind of event more fruitful.

Nasrul Hamid, MP, Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources mainly focused on Youth Capacity Development so that young people can bring out the best cost-efficient and sustainable renewable energy resources solutions. He added that if we can create 5 entrepreneurs and make them sustainable, then they can create more than 5000 employment possibilities nationwide. He suggested that this program Bicchuron can be organized with the celebration Energy Week organized by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources every year. He also added that his ministry will provide funds for establishing Energy labs in different universities.

The honorable chief guest along with distinguished guests announced the top 10 innovative ideas at the end of the final pitching round and handed over awards and certificates to the winning teams. In the near future, the top 10 winning teams will receive seed fund and technical assistance help from Power Cell, Green Delta Insurance Company and Young Bangla to implement their projects or initiatives.
