Young Bangla to launch its promising campaign ‘Women’s Safety in Public Places-WSPP’ on October 14th 2020

In recent days the safety of women and girls is at high risk and the prevalence of sexual harassment and violence against women and girls has been escalated at an alarming level. In our observation the nature and dimension of incidents are more beyond a mere criminal offense rather indicates massive deterioration of social values, lack of enforcement of laws and not respecting the dignity of women and girls.

Amid this context, Young Bangla, a youth platform of Centre of Research and Information (CRI), Human Rights Programme- UNDP and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) collaborated to address the cause and going to launch a nationwide campaign ‘Women’s Safety in Public Places’ on 14th October 2020 at 7.00pm. The event will be live broadcasted on Young Bangla, UNDP and NHRC facebook pages.

The Women’s Safety in Public Places-WSPP campaign has a significant timeline to mention because it has been more than 2years that CRI’s youth platform – Young Bangla, being the largest youth network in Bangladesh is working on the women’s safety issue to gradually stop women harassment in public places. On 7th March Joy Bangla Concert 2019 Young Bangla took the oath to initiate a campaign for the cause in front of approximately thirty–five thousand youth of Bangladesh. It has organized a three day long residential training workshop on ‘Gender Based Violence and Women’s Safety in Public Places’ in April 2019. The workshop was designed to give a basic understanding of Gender Based Violence (GBV), and masculinity. The overall objective was to sensitize the youth leaders about gender-based violence (GBV) and draw out a set of strategies and actions as part of a campaign plan for women’s safety in public places which will ultimately be led by Young Bangla members. In addition to this workshop, twenty members of Young Bangla participated again in a two-day workshop in Dhaka on Gender Based Violence which was organized by Human Rights Programme (HRP) of UNDP in September 2019.

The campaign aims to create positive perceptions, attitudes and behaviors on women’s and girl’s equal rights through massive awareness raising activities among the youth & other relevant actors, particularly on women safety concerns. In addition, it also aims to bring necessary policy reform to comprehensively address gender-based violence and harassment in public places. The campaign will comprise an action plan for disseminating information, capacity enhancement training for stakeholders and advocating for policy and legal reform. 10 leading youth organizations, in 5 divisional cities and 5 districts across Bangladesh, will implement the WSPP campaign.
