Let’s Talk on Disaster Management and Resilience

Young Bangla of the Centre for Research and Information, held its 47th Let’s Talk event on June 7th, 2023, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali, Barisal. Let’s Talk serves as a policy discussion and idea-sharing platform between young minds and policymakers in Bangladesh. The 47th Let’s Talk, organized by Young Bangla, focused on the topic of ‘Disaster Management & Resilience’ with the participation of over 350 students from the Patuakhali district. 

The interactive session featured a panel of esteemed speakers, including Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman, Member of Parliament and Honorable State Minister of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief; Aparajita Haque, Member of Parliament and part of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology; Professor Dr. Swadesh Chandra Samanta, Vice Chancellor of Patuakhali Science and Technology University; and Jannatul Mauwa, recipient of the Joy Bangla Youth Award 2022 and Executive Director of Bindu Nari Unnayan Sangathan. 

At the Let’s Talk event, several issues related to the disaster management and resilience field were discussed including disaster management prevention, awareness raising, and youth training, increasing facilities in the shelter homes, disaster insurance, long-term disaster prevention plan etc. 

On the topic of a long-term disaster prevention plan, the State Minister in the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman said, “We have a long-term disaster prevention plan which is the Delta Plan of 2100. 6 hot spots are on focus for this plan which are cyclones, river erosion, flood management, flood management in the Howrah region, hill management in the hill tracks, and waste management. We have a budget of 37 billion dollars to execute this plan by 2100.”
