Women’s Safety in Public Places

Young Bangla, the youth platform of the Centre for Research and Information (CRI), along with the National Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have initiated a nationwide action-focused awareness-raising campaign to bring positive transformation on perceptions, attitudes and behaviors of youth, community members and relevant stakeholders regarding ‘Women’s Safety in Public Places’. Another aim of this intervention is to identify policy gaps that require immediate attention to address this issue at policy level.

WSPP campaign will be a multi-pronged systematic effort to convey public demand to end sexual harassment against women and girls in public places to the institutions and individuals, as well as to influence their perceptions and actions. This campaign is aiming for institutional and policy changes, including effective laws, policies and act that prevent sexual harassment in public places and support survivors. This campaign is aiming for attitudinal and behavioral change in general people through generating public awareness. The time period for this campaign is initially one year that may extend based on its success and effectiveness.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of this campaign is to ‘’sensitize and aware the people in advancing women’s safety and protection in all public places of Bangladesh’’. This will be achieved through:

  • Sensitizing and raising awareness of general population including young men and boys on women’s safety with a particular focus on sexual harassment against women & girls in public places; and
  • Reinforcing the institutional and policy actions to prevent sexual harassment and introduce an appropriate legal mechanism for better protection of women and girls from sexual harassment in public places.

THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

10 Youth organization affiliated with the Young Bangla platform of CRI will be implementing the campaign in 10 areas. Youth from Jubo Bangla network of the Human Rights Progarmme will be engaged in implementation of field activities. The WSSP campaign will be held in following areas:
